BWT-TOC a new Javascript Menu is an inpage table of contents (ToC). What it does is scan the page for any H2 and H3 headlines. Organizes those headlines into a list of clickable links. The initial view is of a button that says "? On his Page." (upper right corner). When clicked or tapped on a dropdown menu appears. The links take you to that section. Give it a try---->

Do you know why people call fixing broken computers, debugging? Because the first computer of any significance shorted out. When the engineers went to fix it they found a spider had crossed 2 wires in a circuit, shorting them out. They coined the term "debugging."

So, they debugged the machine and the term got hijacked by future programmers. Now, programmers call fixing their mistakes "debugging."

As if the term, debugging, let's programmers off the hook for fat fingering the keyboard or botching a critical piece of code or basically screwing the pooch. I have even heard the term used to cover for outright incompetance.

I worked with this one guy who claimed the code didn't work but he "would have it soon, just needed a little more time debugging." "How long will that take" I asked. "2 weeks minumum" he replied. So, I asked "how long have you been debugging?" And he said "6 months." I said "I would be happy to assist if you like." "No thanks" he said "I can handle it." I told him "you have 2 days to get it done, or I was going to step in."

Well, 2 days later I did step in. And, long story short that programmer turned out to be incompetant. He had fooled a dozen previous engineers into believing he knew what the problems were and how to solve them.

In the end I found a crossed wire that was giving a false reading. The programmer spent 6 months trying to rewrite perfectly good code and failed to debug the machine. He had ruled out a wiring issue all together, when that was the problem all along. All he had to do was look for spiders, I mean debug the machine.
